The Greta Effect: Will you speak truth to power?

Writer's picture: Darren LimDarren Lim

In sunny Singapore, we love to complain about the weather! It’s understandable. Living so close to the equator, we experience furnace-level heat waves almost daily.

“Wah I cannot take it today so hot sia!”

“Ya lor this global warming walao”

And then we move on with our lives.

Overseas, a girl named Greta lives in Sweden. Sweden is a mild country with comfortable weather that rarely hits Singaporean highs. She could have lived comfortably without voicing her concerns about global warming. After all, it doesn’t affect her for now, right?

And yet this girl chose to speak truth to power. Taking a break from school, she became an activist that addressed climate change at the UN, confronting the leaders of the world with hard truth.

At the workplace, especially a workplace with few or no accidents, it’s very easy to turn a blind eye to safety hazards and bad habits. After all, nobody has gotten hurt before, so why bother?

The thing is, these small hazards and bad habits tend to add up. They increase little by little, like the pressure in a pressure cooker. And when it comes to a boil?

Injury, or worse, death.

Let’s be willing to speak up and suggest improvements to our workplace safety standards! Maybe if we nip small problems in the bud, we’d save a life in the long run. And that life may be your own.

At PDS, we speak about safety because we are passionate about your life. Need a second opinion about your workplace safety? Drop us an email or a call!

Warm regards,
