We’ve all played Country Erasers in Primary School. That game where we flip erasers bearing the flags of various countries, battling for dominance!
Our desks would be awash in a sea of white, red, blue, yellow and green.
But here’s an interesting fact.
Did you know that almost NO flags use the colour purple?
It’s true! In fact, only 2 or 3 national flags use that colour. And those flags use very, very little of it.
Why, though?
Purple dye used to be EXTREMELY difficult to make. They were made from sea snails, and over 12,000 snails were needed to produce enough dye to make a simple purple trim! So, because a country flag needs to be reproduced millions of times, it simply wasn’t feasible to make the flag purple!
Now, modern research has resulted in plenty of synthetic dyes. That’s why we can wear purple clothing, anytime and anywhere!
It’s the same with safety equipment.
