What Can A Pokemon Teach Us About Our Healthcare Workers?

Writer's picture: Darren LimDarren Lim

Have you ever seen this Pokemon before?

His name is Absol.

It’s a solitary Pokemon that stays in the mountains. Its keen senses allow it to predict natural disasters before they happen.

Sure, Absol could choose to simply avoid the disasters it foresees. But it has a heart of gold. It goes into populated areas to warn people about upcoming disasters.

Unfortunately, that led to people assuming that Absol BRINGS those disasters.

So they shunned Absol as an omen of bad luck, driving it deeper into isolation.

Now, on a completely ‘unrelated’ note: nurses have been harassed and openly shunned in public. That’s because some people see them as bringers of disease.

And that mentality is absol-utely wrong.

Our healthcare workers understand the risks of the virus better than anyone else. But instead of saving themselves, they bravely take to the front lines. They care for the afflicted and are a huge reason why Singapore's situation is improving. And fatalities have also remained low thanks to their hard work. Some of them work overtime and stay at their workplaces overnight.

Sure, it’s scary to see a person dressed in scrubs and a mask. But know that this person should be appreciated for their services and sacrifices.

As a society, times of crisis should bring out the best in us. Let’s do our part in celebrating these heroes in healthcare who absol-utely deserve it!
